[suppressor of cytokine signaling] SOCS proteins constitute a family of proteins that act as feedback inhibitors regulating responses to cytokines by interfering with signal transduction pathways involving mediators such as Janus kinases and STAT proteins (Hilton et al, 1998; Starr et al, 1997; O'Sullivan et al, 2007; Croker et al, 2008). They are components of many different cytokine receptor signaling pathways and therefore function as important regulators of innate and adaptive immunity (Yoshimura et al, 2007; Dalpke et al, 2008; Liongue et al, 2016).
All SOCS proteins contain a so-called SOCS box domain, which has been found also in other proteins and is known to be involved in protein ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation.
