[SOCS box domains, SOCS box]
This protein domain of approximately 40 amino acids was identified first in the SOCS protein, which is a supressor of cytokine signaling. The domain is found in a number of proteins, where it is invariably located at the C-terminus. The SOCS box appears to be involved in targeting proteins for the attachment of ubiquitin moieties.
The SOCS box contains a sub-domain, called BC box, which is found also in the VHLa domain. The BC box facilitates binding to the Elongin BC complex. This complex is known to interact with the von-Hippel Lindau tumor suppressor protein to form the core of the larger VCB E3 ubiquitin
