[STAT protein]
[signal transducers and activators of transcription] STAT proteins are a family of unrelated cytoplasmic signaling proteins involved in signal transduction of several cytokines (for some aspects see also: Janus kinases). They function as latent cytoplasmic transcriptional activators that become activated by tyrosine phosphorylation (see also: PTK) in response to the engagement of various cytokine receptors. Phosphorylated STAT proteins dimerize and subsequently move to the cell nucleus, where they activate transcription by binding to specific DNA elements (see also: Response elements). For a strategy employing signaling througth STAT proteins in studies of protein-protein interactions see: MAPPIT.
