This cytotoxic protein has been identified in tissue extracts of cabbage butterfly species (Pieris rapae, Pieris napi and Pieris brassicae) by virtue of its cytotoxicity for human gastric carcinoma cells (Koyama et al, 1996) and has been purified as a protein of 98 kDa by Watanabe et al (1998). The protein has been renamed from Pierisin to Pierisin-1, following the identification of Pierisin-2 (for related proteins see also: Pierisin-3, Pierisin-4, Pierisin-5, Pierisin-6).
Cells dying in response to this protein show characteristic features of cell death by apoptosis
