Paneth cells, described originally by Paneth (1888) and Schwalbe (1872), are specialized secretory epithelial cells located at the bases of intestinal crypts (crypts of Lieberkühn) (Porter et al, 2002). These serous cells are sometimes being referred to as Davidoff's cells (Davidov's cells).
The Paneth cell lineage is the only lineage that executes its terminal differentiation program during a downward migration from the stem cell zone to the crypt base (Cheng H, 1974).
