PUM

[peanut-reactive urinary mucin] This name has been given to a protein isolated as a urinary mucin (Karlsson et al, 1983) that shows a genetically determined polymorphism as demonstrated by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by detection with radio-iodinated lectins, with Peanut agglutinin being the most effective lectin. The same polymorphic protein is expressed in other normal and malignant tissues of epithelial origin including the mammary gland. A series of tandem repeats constitutes much of the coding region of the PUM gene and allelic variation is due to variation in the number of repeats. The protein is the same as the breast tumor-associated epithelial mucins and is identical with Mucin 1 (Griffith et al, 1988).
