abbr. MUC-1. Mucin 1 is a member of a family of structurally related cell surface epithelial mucins. This epithelial mucin is a large cell surface and secreted glycoprotein highly expressed by virtually all mucosal epithelial tissues (Gendler, 2001). The large extracellular domain is made up largely of 20 amino acid tandem repeats and the cytoplasmic tail is short (69 amino acids) (Gendler et al, 1990; Wreschner et al, 1990; Ligtenberg et al, 1990). The protein is highly polymorphic due to the presence of VNTR repeats (Gendler et al, 1987, 1990).
Mucin 1 is expressed aberrantly in most human breast cancers. Kufe et al (1984) have reported that monoclonal antibody DF3 reacts with over 75 % of primary human breast carcinomas Kufe et al, 1984).
Mucin 1 is expressed also by many hematopoietic cell
