Noggin

Approved gene symbol: NOG.

The cDNA encoding this secreted protein has been isolated initially from Xenopus laevis (Smith et al, 1992). Noggin (26 kDa) is capable of inducing dorsal development in Xenopus laevis embryos. Injection of noggin mRNA into ventralized embryos rescues normal development and causes excessive head development at high doses (Smith et al, 1992).

Noggin is produced by the dorsal mesoderm and induces the formation of anterior neural tissue. Noggin is capable of directly inducing neural tissue in the absence of dorsal mesoderm (Lamb et al, 1993; McMahon et al, 1998).
