The Nimrod gene superfamily constitutes a cluster of ten related nimrod genes in Drosophila melanogaster. Similar clusters of nimrod-like genes are conserved in other insects such as Anopheles and Apis. The Nimrod cluster is a functional module of the insect innate immune response (Somogyi et al, 2008, 2010). The Nimrod proteins are related to other putative phagocytosis receptors such as Eater and Draper from Drosophila melanogaster and CED1 from Caenorhabditis elegans.
