abbr. Ng1. This factor is secreted by hippocampal astrocytes and dentate granule cells adjacent to neural stem cells. Neurogenesin-1 contains three cysteine-rich domains and a unique sequence. The protein is involved in neuronal differentiation of neural stem cells in the adult brain and prevents differentiation into glial cells.
The protein has been identified independently as CHL [chordin-like-1], Ventroptin, and Neuralin-1. A databank synonym for the rat sequence is kohjirin. A previously used gene symbol is NRLN1
