This designation has been proposed by Ting et al (2008) (for another designation see also: CLR family). The abbreviation NLR stands for Nod-like receptors, the first two proteins of this family being NOD1 and NOD2. These proteins are known to act as intracellular regulators of bacterial-induced inflammation (Chamaillard et al, 2003; Fritz et al, 2006; Meylan et al, 2006).
Members of this protein family are characterized by the presence of a nucleotide-binding domain (NBS) and one or more copies of a C-terminal leucine-rich repeat domain (LRR). The term NBS-LRR proteins is used also to refer to these proteins.
