This gene, abbr. Fiz, has been identified by Mayr et al (1997). Fritz is one of the frizzled-related proteins and sequence analysis shows that Fritz is identical with sFRP3. Fritz antagonizes Wnt signaling when both proteins are expressed ectopically in Xenopus embryos. In early gastrulation, the mouse Fritz gene is expressed in all three germ layers. Later in embryogenesis, expression is observed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, nephrogenic mesenchyme and several other tissues, all of which are sites where proteins belonging to the Wnt family have been implicated in tissue patterning.
