NG2

[neuronal/glial 2; nerve/glial antigen 2] NG2 is a rat chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan. It is a single-pass transmembrane protein. The numbers of glyco- and glycosaminoglycan chains varies according to cell type and developmental stage. The antigen is expressed by progenitor cells of glial cells in developing and adult CNS and also by immature Schwann cells. Expression is downregulated as oligodendrocytes mature (Niehaus et al, 1999). The mouse homolog has been identified as AN2 (Niehaus et al, 1999).
