abbr. M-cells (not to be confused with M cells, which are either mucosal M cells or Peyer's patch M cells). Morning cells (also: Morning neurons) are specialized ventral lateral neurons in the brain of Drosophila melanogaster. They function as clock neurons of the circadian system, are predominant over the other clocks under constant darkness and control the activity at dawn under light and dark cycles (Grima et al, 2004; Stoleru et al, 2004). Morning cells need darkness to cycle autonomously and dominate the network (Stoleru et al, 2007). The cooperation of morning cells with evening cells underlies the behavioral adjustment to variations in daylength and season (Stoleru et al, 2007).
