[mucosal M cell]
The "M cells" in this term stands for microfold cells (Fujimura et al, 1986). These cells are present in the small intestine and co-secrete two hormones: motilin and ghrelin (Polak et al, 1975; Forssmann et al, 1976; Kishimoto et al, 1981; Usellini et al, 1984; Wierup et al, 2007). Cholinergic and bombesin receptors are present on M cells and stimulate motilin release, whereas adrenergic and somatostatin receptors block it (Poitras et al, 1997). The cells are known also as motilin cells. In some publications these cells are being referred to as Mo cells
