abbr. E-cells (not to be confused with E cells found in the antrum part of the stomach). Evening cells (also: Evening neurons) are specialized dorsal neurons in the brain of Drosophila melanogaster. Together with some other dorsal lateral neurons these cells induce the activity at dusk under light and dark cycles (Murad et al, 2007; Grima et al, 2004; Stoleru et al, 2004). Stoleru et al (2007) have shown that E-cells process light information and function as master clocks in the presence of light, which is in contrast to M-cells that need darkness to cycle autonomously and dominate the network.
