[Modulin]

a collective term for proteins, glycoproteins, lipoproteins, carbohydrates, and lipids associated with the bacterial cell surface that modulate cellular functions of eukaryotic cells during infection, often interfering with bioactivities of cytokines or growth factors and/or regulating their expression (Henderson et al, 1996). Initially, these mediators were noted because of their capacity to cause cell activation of inflammatory cells and/or stimulation of mammalian cells such as monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, epithelial cells and others to produce a diverse array of cytokines.
