This term describes the extent of stimulation of cellular processes initiated as a response to external stimuli reaching the cell. Thus, the terms activated cells, sensitized cells, primed cells, refer to any cell type having undergone stimulation by outside stimuli. Sensitized cells are usually cells of the immune system that have been activated by exposure to an antigen. More strictly the term cell activation refers to the transition of cells from the G0 phase to the G1 phase of the eukaryotic Cell cycle. For a special type of cell activation involving cell-to-cell contacts between fibroblasts see also: nemosis.
