[macrophage inflammatory protein-1-alpha] A factor produced by macrophages that causes local inflammatory responses in vivo, and induces superoxide production by neutrophils in vitro. Two peptides are responsible for this activity. They have been termed MIP-1-alpha, and MIP-1-beta (Sherry et al, 1988). See: MIP. The factor is known also as SCYA3. The approved gene symbol is CCL3.
A naturally occurring heterodimer consisting of MIP-1-alpha and MIP-1-beta has been isolated from culture supernatants and cell extracts of human monocytes and peripheral blood lymphocytes
