Lunatusin is an anti-fungal peptide purified from the seeds of Chinese lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) (Wong and Ng, 2005). The peptide has anti-fungal activity toward fungal species such as Fusarium oxysporum, Mycosphaerella arachidicola and Botrytis cinerea, and also has antibacterial activity for Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus subtilis, Proteus vulgaris and Mycobacterium phlei. It also inhibits the proliferation in the breast cancer cell line MCF-7. Lunatusin reduces the activity of HIV1 reverse transcriptase and it also inhibits translation in a cell-free rabbit reticulocyte lysate system. Lunatusin also elicits a mitogenic response from mouse splenocytes.
