[leukocyte endogenous mediator] This factor was isolated initially from leukocytes as a protein inducing the synthesis of acute phase proteins in the liver (see: acute phase reaction). It was found also to reduce plasma concentrations of iron and zinc and to induce neutrophilia.
LEM is identical with LP (leukocytic pyrogen; see: EP, endogenous pyrogens) and hence identical with IL1 (Merriman et al, 1977; Whicher et al, 1986).
