[pyrogen, pyrogenic]
[Endogenous pyrogens] Endogenous pyrogens are substances that are produced by the host during inflammation, trauma (see also: wound healing), or infection. They elevate the thermoregulatory set point in the hypothalamus and usually induce a rapid rise (within 12 minutes) in core temperature after intravenous injection.
One protein with EP activity was isolated initially from leukocytes and was called also leukocytic pyrogen (abbr. LP). This protein is identical with LEM (leukocytic endogenous mediator) and hence identical with IL1.
Some of the EP activity described in the older literature may be due also to TNF-alpha and
