[Acute phase protein]
(abbr. APP) or acute phase reactants (APR) is the generic name given to a group of approximately 30 different biochemically and functionally unrelated proteins. These proteins are secreted by hepatocytes (Ruminy et al, 2001) and their levels in the serum are either increased (positive acute phase reactants) or reduced (negative acute phase reactants) approximately 90 minutes after the onset of a systemic inflammatory reaction (see also: acute phase reaction, inflammation) (Gabay and Kushner, 1999).
