[L1 cell adhesion molecule] In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD171.
The human gene encoding L1CAM has been cloned by Hlavin and Lemmon (1991) and Kobayashi et al (1991). The human and mouse proteins share 92 % sequence identity. 2 alternatively spliced isoforms of L1CAM have been identified by Reid and Hemperly (1992). One isoform is expressed in some leukocytes, intestinal crypt cells, and kidney tubule epithelial cells. The other isoforms is expressed in neurons.
