This term has multiple meanings:

Enteroendocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract (mainly ileum and colon) that are defined by their ability to synthesize glucagon. They are not to be confused with the glucagon cells of the pancreas.
Gastrointestinal L cells are derived from a common totipotent stem cell together with other enteroendocrine cells.
Apart from glucagon, these cells also secrete peptides of the glucagon family, such as glicentin (Ravazzola et al, 1979; Garraud et al, 1980). There appear to be distinct populations of L cells that express GLP-1. Some subpopulations co-express
