This cell type with characteristics of stem cells (Jang et al, 2008) is found in the basal part of the olfactory epithelium as a monolayer of flattened cells directly apposed and tightly adherent to the basal lamina. The cells are found among another cell type with stem cell-like characteristics, termed Globose basal cells. In humans, the basal compartment does not contain Horizontal basal cells (Hahn et al, 2005).
Horizontal basal cells appear in late embryogenesis and form a complete differentiated monolayer only after birth (Holbrook et al, 1995). Lineage tracing demonstrates that some of these cells are multipotent cells
