[heparin binding growth factor-8] This factor was isolated from bovine uterus on the basis of its ability to bind to heparin (see also: HBGF, heparin binding growth factors) (Milner et al, 1989). It was renamed PTN [pleiotrophin] to reflect its various bioactivities (Li et al, 1990).
HBGF-8 and PTN are identical with HBNF (heparin binding neurite-promoting factor). For a role in innate immunity as an antimicrobial protein see: PTN [pleiotrophin].
Note: In some databanks HBGF-8 is used as a synonym for FGF8 [Fibroblast growth factor-8
