[heparin binding growth factors] This is a generic term to describe factors that can be isolated by affinity chromatography on Heparin-Sepharose columns (HSAC = Heparin-Sepharose affinity chromatography) due to their very high affinity for heparin (Hearn et al, 1987; Lobb et al, 1986). The ability to bind to heparin appears to be a general property of many growth-regulating factors (Burgess and Maciag, 1989). HSAC is therefore a technique employed frequently to isolate new growth factors from tissues, serum, or the conditioned medium of cultured cells, allowing their purification almost in a single step.
