named after the German histologist Karl Hürthle (1860-1945). Frequently misspelled Hurtle cells, Hurthle cells, Huerthle cells.
These cells are found in the thyroid gland (Raikhlin and Mikhailov, 1974). They are large granular epithelial cells with acidophilic cytoplasm and large numbers of mitochondria with a high content of oxidative enzymes (Maximo and Sobrinho-Simoes, 2000). These cells of unknown function are seen in non-neoplastic and neoplastic tissues.
