This term, introduced by Villar and Durán (2017), refers to a kind of cell death by apoptosis caused by imbalanced catabolism of glutamine, the most abundant amino acid in the blood of humans that produces alpha-ketoglutarate to replenish the TCA cycle (for an overview of its role in cell metabolism, signalling, and influence on gene expression in normal cells and tumor cells see: DeBerardinis RJ and Cheng, 2010).
