Autophagy

[autophagosome, autophagic vacuole, autophagolysosome, autophagic]

Autophagy or autophagic cell death (also referred to as Type 2 cell death, type 2 programmed cell death; see also: Suzanne and Steller, 2013), is one of the major pathways for the degradation of long-lived proteins and cellular organelles. While autophagy is seen generally as a nonselective bulk degradation process, it also plays a role in more selective degradation mechanisms.l The general term selective autophagy has been used to describe autophagy processes that, among other things, degrade specific proteins, organelles, and also invading bacteria. Autophagy is a nonspecific degradative pathway that enables cells to recycle cytoplasm and dispose of excess or defective organelles.
