[oxidative stress-induced cell death] A form of programmed cell death induced by oxidative stress described by Tan et al (2001).
Oxytosis is caused by a sequence of events beginning with an excess of glutamate in the extracellular medium. The process is frequently being referred to as oxidative glutamate toxicity or glutamate-induced oxytosis (see also: Glutamoptosis).
Glutamate inhibits uptake of cystine, which is required for the synthesis of glutathione. Depletion of glutathione in neurons causes the production of reactive oxygen species by mitochondria, which causes calcium ion influx from the extracellular medium that eventually leads to cell death.
