[FLIPs]
[FLICE-inhibitory proteins] FLIPs are proteins encoded by various viruses (including bovine Herpesvirus 4, KSHV [Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus], human molluscipoxvirus, Herpesvirus saimiri, equine herpesvirus type 2 (E8)). These virus-encoded forms are usually referred to as vFLIPs [Viral FLICE-inhibitory proteins].
FLIPs contain death effector domains that can interact with the adaptor protein FADD, which is involved in signaling of cell death by apoptosis. Inhbition of FADD inhibits the activation of FLICE, a protease
