[epithelial cellular adhesion molecule, epithelial cell adhesion molecule] This name has been suggested by Litvinov et al (1994) for a 40 kDa epithelial glycoprotein known at that time as EGP40 [epithelial glycoprotein 40], ESA [epithelial surface antigen], KSA, 17-1A antigen, GA733-2 antigen [gastrointestinal tumor-associated antigen 2]. The name reflects some of the observed bioactivities, namely its ability to increase intercellular adhesion between cells, and to suppress invasive colony growth of some cell types.
