[epithelial glycoprotein 40] EGP40 is a 40 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein that is expressed on the majority of epithelial cells (Spurr et al, 1986; Edwards et al, 1986; Momburg et al, 1987; Bumol et al, 1988). The protein is considered a human pan-carcinoma antigen. The protein is encoded by the GA733-2 gene (Linnenbach et al, 1993). Human and murine EGP40 show 86 % homology (Bergsagel et al, 1992).
EGP40 is probably involved in intercellular or cell-substrate adhesion of epithelial cells (Thampoe et al, 1988; Simon et al, 1990). Litvinov et al (1994) have reported that EGP40 functions as a calcion ion-independent cell adhesion molecule that may play a role in the organization of epithelial tissues, in cell segregation in multilayered epithelia
