The name endosialin has been proposed for the cell surface glycoprotein FB5, identified by a monoclonal antibody of the same name. The cloned sequence of endosialin (Christian et al, 2001) is identical with TEM1 [Tumor endothelial marker 1]. In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD248.
FB5 is a tumor stromal antigen thought to be expressed selectively in vascular endothelial cells of malignant tumors. Normal blood vessels and other adult tissues lack FB5
