This protein is expressed predominantly and at elevated levels on the cell surface of endothelial cells in newly developing blood vessels and on tumor cells (see: TEM1). MacFadyen et al (2005) have reported that endosialin is a marker of stromal fibroblasts and pericytes and is not selectively expressed on tumor endothelium. Expression of CD248 has been reported also on vascular leukocytes, a subset of leukocytes expressing markers of dendritic cells
