[egg laying abnormal-1] EGL-1 is one of more than 40 genes that affect egg laying in Caenorhabditis elegans (Trent et al, 1983). The EGL-1 gene encodes a cell death initiator protein that belongs to a group of proteins called BH3-only proteins as they contain a single BH3 domain but not the other BCL2 homology domains found in members of the BCL2 family of proteins. This BH3 domain allows EGL-1 to interact with other proteins.
