DRS
[distantly related to SIC] see: SIC.
This virulence factor is expressed and secreted by M12 strains of Streptococcus pyogenes. The sequence is related to a virulence factor, SIC, found in other strains (Hartas and Sriprakash, 1999). DRS has been shown to bind to the C6 and C7 complement proteins and competes with SIC for binding (Binks and Sriprakash, 2004).
Fernie-King et al (2007) have shows that SLPI, which kills M1 strains and is inhibited by SIC, cannot kill M12 strains. DRS binds to, but cannot inhibit SLPI killing of M1 strains. DRS inhibits the antibacterial action of human
