This murine myelomonocytic cell line is used to assay LIF (see also: bioassays, cytokine assays) by its ability to induce the generation of colonies of differentiated cells in a colony formation assay. Pennica et al (1995) have demonstrated that Cardiotrophin-1 inhibits the growth of the M1 mouse cells.
The assay is not specific since IL6 shows the same biological activity and both factors in combination show enhanced actions. However, LIF is 16-25-fold more active than IL6. Induction of differentiation
