abbr. CASP14. This enzyme is a member of a family of evolutionarily conserved cysteine protease proteins known as caspases. Many of these enzymes are part of a proteolytic cascade that plays a central role in cell death by apoptosis.
The human and mouse gene for caspase-14 has been cloned by Van de Craen et al (1998) and Eckhart et al (2000). Eckhart et al (2000) have identified two transcripts, designated caspase-14a and caspase-14b, that differ in their C termini. Caspase-14 appears to be expressed during the differentiation of keratinocytes.
