Canstatin

This protein of 24 kDa is derived from human basement membranes. The protein has been identified as a fragment derived from the C-terminal globular non-collagenous (NC1) domain of the alpha-2 chain of collagen type 4 (collagen-4-alpha-2 NC1 domain; abbr. also: alpha2(IV)NC1) (Kamphaus et al, 2000). For similar proteins see also: Tetrastatin, Tumstatin, Arresten, Endostatin, Restin.

Sugiyama et al (2019) have reported that Cathepsin S, which is increased in the infarcted area after myocardial infarction in rats, degrades Canstatin and, therefore, may play a role in the pathophysiology of infarctation.
