This protein of 26 kDa is associated with the vascular basement membrane. It is the NC1 domain of the alpha-1 chain of collagen type 4 (collagen-4-alpha-1 NC1 domain; abbr. also: alpha1(IV)NC1). For similar proteins see also: Tumstatin, Canstatin, Endostatin, Restin.
Arresten inhibits proliferation of endothelial cells, migration, tube formation, and Matrigel neovascularization and thus functions as a negative regulator of angiogenesis. Arresten has been shown to inhibit the growth of two human xenograft tumors in nude mice and the development of tumor metastases.
