[collagen-4; type 4 collagen] Collagen type 4 is the predominant collagen in vascular basement membranes of blood capillaries (Timpl, 1996). The native protein forms triple helices that are composed of three alpha chains, which exist in six isomeric forms, termed as alpha-1 to alpha- 6 isoforms (Zhou et al, 1994). These six chains are encoded by six different genes (COL4A1 [collagen-4-alpha-1], COL4A2 [collagen-4-alpha-2], COL4A3 [collagen-4-alpha-3], COL4A4 [collagen-4-alpha-4], COL4A5 [collagen-4-alpha-5], COL4A6 [
