[cysteine protease 32] CPP32 is highly related in terms of sequence homology and substrate specificity to the Caenorhabditis elegans gene product CED3 implicated in programmed cell death by apoptosis. CPP32 is known also as YAMA, or Apopain, isolated initially as an enzyme responsible for the cleavage of PARP1 [poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1] and necessary for apoptosis. A related protease is CMH-1. It has been suggested that CPP32 be renamed Caspase-3 (see: Caspases) (Alnemri et al, 1996).
