COP cells
[circulating osteogenic precursors] This cell type has been found to be present in the peripheral circulation (Eghbali-Fatourechi et al, 2005). Various other names have been used to refer to COP cells: blood mesenchymal precursor cells, circulating skeletal stem cells, monocyte-derived mesenchymal progenitors, osteogenic blood-derived adherent cells, circulating fibrocytes, and circulating osteoblast-lineage cells (for overview see also: Pignolo and Shore, 2010; Pignolo and Kassem, 2011).
These cells can be detected in the peripheral blood, using antibodies specific for the osteoblast matrix protein osteocalcin
