abbr. also: OC, OCN. The approved gene symbol for this protein is BGLAP [bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein]. Other names are Gamma-carboxyglutamic acid-containing protein, bone gla protein (abbr. BGP; not to be confused with matrix Gla protein), identified originally in chicken bone by Hauschka et al (1975) and Price et al (1976) in bovine bone as proteins that contain calcium-binding gamma-carboxyglutamate. Vitamin K dependent gamma-carboxylation of the human protein is not complete (Cairns and Price, 1994).
