[cell death inhibiting RNA] This RNA is encoded in the 3'-untranslated region of KIAA0425, a gene of unknown function, which has been isolated also as zinc finger protein 262 (znf262, Zfp262) (Smedley et al, 1999). The approved gene symbol is ZMYM4 [zinc finger MYM-type 4].
The RNA has been shown to bind to AUF1, a protein that regulates mRNA decay, and to one of the heat shock proteins, hsp27 (Shchors et al, 2002). The RNA inhibits cell death by apoptosis caused in HeLa cells by IFN-gamma. The authors have suggested that CDIR may inhibit apoptosis
