[AU-rich element RNA binding protein 1] This is the same as AUF1A [AU-rich element RNA binding protein 1A]. The approved gene symbol is HNRNPD [heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein D]. AUF1 is an essentially nuclear RNA-binding protein identified by Brewer (1991) and Zhang et al (1993). AUF1 can shuttle between the nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments (Zhang et al, 1993; Sarkar et al, 2003). The protein binds with high affinity to AU-rich elements (see: ARE) in the 3' untranslated region of many short-lived mRNAs, including those encoding growth factors and cytokines, and oncogenes, and is involved in selective mRNA degradation processes.
