This ATP binding cassette gene has been characterized by Doyle et al (1998) who observed that enforced expression of the BCRP gene in MCF-7 breast cancer cells confers resistance to various chemotherapeutic drugs (mitoxantrone, doxorubicin, daunorubicin. Expression of BCRP reduces daunorubicin accumulation and retention, and causes an ATP-dependent enhancement of the efflux or rhodamine-123. The authors have concluded that BCRP is a xenobiotic transporter with a major role in the multidrug resistance phenotype of a specific human breast cancer.
